I don’t know, I’m not as consistent. I had some good matches, some tough run-outs, and then some bad mistakes and unforced errors.”

Reyes & Bustamante Both Suffer Losses

Reyes Bustamante Both Suffer LossesIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 5 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=19)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)Michael Hill was responsible for defeating Bustamante, in a double-hill match that saw Bustamante hover on the hill first before Hill swept by. “I feel exhausted, to be honest,” Hill stated. “I just have to try to regroup now and get my head back on for the next match. I played great—I was up seven-four then got really nervous and tense thinking I was going to beat someone of Francisco’s class, then I missed an easy chance to win eight-four, sat in my chair, had an easy chance to win eight-six, lost it again, and then at seven each I managed to pull out a miracle.”

Strickland Goes off the Air

Strickland Goes off the AirIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 5 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=19)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)“He got under my skin, Strickland, because he was talking to my family and saying stupid stuff,” Van den Berg affirmed afterward, “and he even tried to start a fight with my brother-in-law. Those are things you can’t do. It’s nice to see someone who is entertaining like Mike Sigel but this was just … a disgrace to the sport. That’s all I can say.”

Players Ready for Second Round

July 27th, 2006

Players Ready for Second RoundIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 5 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=19)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)“It really is affected in the mornings or when it’s damp out. The top of the bone is an inch above the bottom bone. I had a three-inch blood clot in my chest after falling two-and-a-half stories, so when my arm was broke they just tied it to my chest and I had it like that for eight months while I was trying to get rid of the blood clot. So after eight months they wanted to do surgery, but I was done with the doctor thing … I started playing one-pocket left-handed for a while then started tenderly playing with my right hand. It’s not one-hundred percent, and I need to get it fixed—right now I want to secure my spot on the IPT first. I hate to have the surgery and then I’m done. It’s so important to get on this year because next year it’s going to be a battle to push your way in.”

But I’m here, I’m here to play, starting off the day real good, just beat a good friend of mine eight-two, you know—one of the world’s most greatest players, Rodney Morris, you can’t ask for anymore.”

Heartbreak and Elation in Wednesday’s Last Round

Heartbreak and Elation in Wednesday’s Last RoundIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 4 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/index.php?cat=14&page=5)Shannon Elizabeth image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=18)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)Afterward, Strickland said, “We were tied for a while, then I hit him with a little flurry. The eight rolled off on him, I thought he should have shot it harder so it didn’t roll off but the ball before that, when he shot the two, it boing’d. But he missed the eight ball to lose the match seven-seven. It was really a hard match, but it should never have been that close.”

Surprises Pepper 5:30 p.m. Rounds

Surprises Pepper 5:30 p.m. RoundsIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 4 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/index.php?cat=14&page=5)Shannon Elizabeth image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=18)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)“The match went good—I played a lot better, and I think I finally found what I was doing wrong from the previous days. Basically, I come from an English pool background where there is a lot of snooker cue action—it’s a lot more mechanic, if you like. I was missing a lot of balls and was playing only thirty percent of my game, so I went back to the old way and started it this morning.”Will he advance? “I am finished today—I’ve won one out of four. I think if the right things happen I can sneak in. I feel alright overall, just a bit disappointed.” Depending on the 8:00 p.m. round, Bustamante may or may not advance, as he only has one win today.

Martinez Continues on Winning Streak

Martinez Continues on Winning StreakIPT discussion forum (/forums/index.php)Day 4 image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/index.php?cat=14&page=5)Shannon Elizabeth image gallery (/pool_billiard_photos/thumbnails.php?album=18)Match schedule (/ipt-north-american-8-ball-championship-tournament-/content/view/3729/102/)When asked how he felt about the rest of the day he added, “I don’t think like that, I think only to do my best and go one match at a time. It would be unrealistic if I said I would win it all. Nobody knows for sure … I’m just trying to play better every match. I haven’t played for a while—I took a few years off.” His hiatus from the game has not appeared to affect Martinez much as yet.Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat lost a hill-hill battle with former World All-Around champion Larry Nevel, but his countryman Efren Reyes bested Gary Abood 8-6 in a rather long match that had spectators cheering and applauding for “The Magician.”
