Fusco, Wei Withdraw from IPT North American OpenBeckley and Heuwagen ReplacementsBreaking NewsDue to personal reasons Mr. Pete Fusco has officially withdrawn from the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship. Fusco was very disappointed that he was not able to play in this event. He admitted that he has practiced very hard for this event. Fusco plans to compete in the World Open.Fusco’s replacement is Jeff Beckley, who was the third alternate on the waitlist to play in the North American Open. Beckley played in multiple IPT qualification tournaments. He had one third place finish in the NA Open qualification system, and played in four of the five weekends of the system. His high finish and multiple attempts placed him third on the alternate list and now on the tournament roster. Beckley was called just minutes ago and was told the news that he would be competing in the North American Open. His first reaction was Are you kidding me? He was very excited to hear the news. Beckley asked who he has replaced and expressed disappointment when he was told that it was Fusco.

July 20th, 2006Hall of Fame Member Jim Rempe Withdraws from North American OpenHall of Fame Member Jim Rempe has withdrawn from the tournament citing personal reasons that are keeping him from being able to perform under the grueling tournament format and conditions. On a telephone call, he reported that he was disappointed about not being able to play in the biggest tournament of his life. Rempe hopes to be able to compete in the World Open, another major just six weeks away. Filling Rempe’s spot in the tournament is Keith Bennett. Bennett has played in multiple IPT qualification events. In the North American Open Qualification System, Bennett took third place in two separate events; he was one of only two players to do so in those 25 events.

Heather Lloyd Wins Top Crown at Hunter Classics Tour Event
July 20th, 2006Heather Lloyd Wins Top Crown at Hunter Classics Tour EventKevin and Gary Welling of G-Cue Billiards in Round Rock, Texas were exceptional hosts to the Hunter Classics Amateur Womens Tours sixth stop of the 2006 season the weekend of July 15-16. At the last minute, Gary and Kevin stepped in and hosted the event when the previous location had to cancel. Thank you, Gary and Kevin!Forty-five ladies came to compete in the tournament for the top first place prize of $750 and also the WPBA Qualifier for a WPBA 2007 event. On the beautiful fourteen 9-foot Brunswick tables, the ladies were out to battle and battle they did. In the end, Heather Lloyd from Austin captured the title and the WPBA Qualifier. Heather exclaimed after the tournament, I cant believe I won! She was extremely happy as she hugged her husband, brother-in-law, and close friends. Being from Austin, there were a lot of friends watching and she said, I have so much support from my husband and friends and it was nice to win a Hunter Classics Tour event in front of them.

July 18th, 20062005-2006 BEF All Americans NamedOutstanding students honored at Junior NationalsColorado Springs, Colorado: The Billiard Education Foundation [BEF] and the Billiard Congress of America [BCA] released its roster of academic All-Americans, following recognition ceremonies at the recent Junior Collegiate 9-Ball Championships in Tucson, Arizona. Twenty outstanding youngsters were selected to receive certificates of their achievement at the awards banquet held July 7, on the University of Arizona campus.The BEF supports and recognizes billiard student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and in competition, through both scholarship awards to first-year undergrads and with its All-American program. All-American honors are given to those who qualify for the BCA Junior Nationals, plus earn a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Students must complete an application and submit their report cards to be considered, and the students named below made the grade in the current academic year.

Mike Davis kept control to win the top spot in the sixteenth of the thirty-stop mega-tour that always draws in the Northeasts top players.With the event on track for a long night, the remaining few battled to advance. Scott Freeman blasted past a consistent top finisher on tour, Shaun Wilkie, 7-1, while Matt Krah, number two on the points list, was nearly as efficient against Mike Fingers, defeating him 7-3. Freeman met with Krah but was no match for the tour patron, who served up a shut-out 7-0. While that match took place, the hot seat showcased Davis and Paul Robinson, with Davis keeping a firm grip on the match until he defeated Robinson 7-4, sending him to face Krah.

Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour strolled into Stix N Stones in Palatka, where an excited crowd watched Scotty Townsend win undefeated.A field of 23 players sparred during the July 15-16 weekend, and by the end of the first day only four players remained. After a vote by the players, the decision was made to resume play at 10 a.m. instead of the usual 1 p.m., causing havoc for tour director Tommy Kennedy, who was still on the winners side.

For the Men’s Championship Ernesto Dominguez, Mauro Ibarra, Enrique Rojas, Jose Luis Perez, Gustavo Espinosa, Alejandro Carvajal, Ernesto Deud, and other great champions from participating countries are all vying for one of five spots to the World Pool Championships to be held this year in the Phillipines.For the Women’s Championship theres is a strong field of National Champions from several countries vying against the 2005 Champ – Mirjana Grujicic, 2004 Champ – Adriana Villar, 2003 Champ – Laura Famin, and 2002 Champ – Soledad Contreras. These 4 women have dominated the Panamerican Championships since it’s inception, with Adriana Villar having 3 runner-up trophies in her resume.

July 13th, 2006Official Player Groupings Announced for IPT North American Open 8-Ball ChampionshipThe IPT is proud to announce the player groupings for the IPT North American Open 8-Ball Championship. The methodology for determining the groups was complex. All of the Hall of Fame members were placed in separate groups; female players were placed into separate groups; all of the players who qualified through the qualification tournament system were placed into separate groups (since there are 50 qualifiers and 40 groups, some groups have two qualified players); finally, a number of the top players, historically, were placed into separate groups. All of the placed players were placed randomly into their respective groups.
