Qualifier Karl Boyes, one of the UKs best, won his first-round match against Germanys Joern Kaplan 8-2, and Daryl Peach defeated Yannick Beaufils of France 8-6. Ralf Souquet, Thomas Engert, Niels Feijen, David Alcaide, and Mika Immonen also won their first matches of the day.
