With 82 players and one air conditioner on the fritz, the atmosphere was steamy, but that didnt bother Charlie Bryant as he whipped through as cool as a cucumber to win the event undefeated.Top picks were James Davis Sr., Jui Lung Chen, Sylver Ochoa, and Barry Emerson. The always-tough Ochoa ended up earning third placehe bested Gordon Van der Veer in the quarterfinals but came up short against Davis Sr. in the semis. Davis, a slow, quiet player, advanced to face Bryant in the final match, exhibiting quite a difference in styles and mannerisms. The powerful and energetic Bryant put on a great display of control over the table and ended up coming out the 9-7 winner over Davis, making this the second event of the year that the IPT member has won.

August 15th, 2006Manalo Claims his First Blaze Title at Castle BilliardsBlaze 9-Ball Tour /Billiards News/ East Rutherford, NJby Rick Davis/Inside POOL Magazine Marvelous Marlon Manalo, the runner-up to the IPTs multi-million-dollar North American Open 8-Ball Championship in July, came back from a quarterfinal loss to win the Blaze 9-Ball Tours nineteenth stop. Held at Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ, the two-day, double-points stop pulled in 42 entries for the August 12-13 weekend.Manalo faced off against fellow IPT pro and Blaze Tour points leader Mike Davis in a grueling match that Davis ultimately won double-hill. The other half of the winners’ side showed less eye candy for the crowd, even though Teddy Garrahan defeated Joey Kong by a solid 9-4 margin. Garrahan then faced Davis in the hot seat match, and before long Davis showed why he leads the tour, as he completely dominated the match with a 9-1 score.

Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour the weekend of August 12-13. Hosted by The Crooked Cue billiard parlor in Waynesville, NC, the stop garnered a field of 33 tough Southern pool players.Working his way through the one-loss side, Kennedy made it to the quarterfinals against Brian White, defeating him 9-6. Meanwhile, Jeff Abernathy and B.J. Ussery fought a hill-hill nail-biter for the hot seat, with Abernathy squeaking by with the prize. Now facing Kennedy, Ussery seemed a bit deflated and went home with a third-place finish after TK in FLA won their match 9-6. In the finals, it was all Kennedy, and he defeated Abernathy 11-6 for the title.

From there, Matlock was sent to the one-loss side to see Rafael Martinez in the second final match. Martinez had the distinction of remaining undefeated in the IPTs North American Open 8-Ball Championship until Wednesdays last round, in which he was bested by Steve Moore of Duluth, GA. Matlock again came up short, as Martinez took the match 10-6.
